About American Express Credit Cards
While American Express is most often thought of as an issuer of high end charge cards, including the ultra-exclusive invitation only Centurion Card, they also offer a range of credit cards, many of which are tied to major travel brands. Unlike most other credit card companies, American Express does not roll out the red carpet with long term, 0% interest rate promotions for purchases and balance transfers. However, many American Express cards do offer generous sign up incentives, such as bonus points and miles.
Charge cards from American Express come in five colors, though only four of these are accessible to mere mortals. Zync from American Express is an entry level charge card with a low $25 annual fee. This is the least expensive way to earn American Express Membership Rewards. As you move up the color scale from Zync to Green to Gold, additional benefits become available, such as exclusive Gold card events. With Platinum, even more perks are available, including free airport club access and a 24/7 concierge service.
American Express credit cards either offer cash back or travel rewards. Their two main cash back cards are Blue Cash and the co-branded Costco True Earnings card. These cards offer above average cash back earning potential, particularly for high spenders.
A particularly noteworthy co-branded American Express credit card is the Gold Delta Skymiles card. Apart from the standard free miles offered with most airline cards, the Delta Skymiles card offers a unique perk: up to eight people traveling with the primary cardholder get their first bag fee waived. This is a savings of $50 per person roundtrip and frequent flyers can easily save more in bag fees than they spend on the annual membership fee.
American Express Credit Card Reviews
American Express Blue Cash Review: Blue Cash is one of the few remaining cash back credit cards that lets cardholders earn a full 5% on gas and groceries. However, in order to start earning 5% on these purchases, cardholders must spend at least $6,500 per year. Full Review
Gold Delta Skymiles Review: The Gold Delta Skymiles card is one of only two airline credit cards that offer free checked bags. This is a valuable perk, worth as much as $50 per person on every roundtrip flight. Additionally, the Delta Skymiles card also offers pay with points, a feature that makes redeeming frequent flyer miles significantly easier than it is via traditional methods. Full Review
