Low Interest Credit Card Tips
Better Credit = Better Interest Rates: The vast majority of credit cards offer multiple interest rates. Consumers with excellent credit have the best chance of getting the lowest advertised rate. However, if you don't qualify for the lowest rate, you may be approved, but offered a significantly higher rate. Those who barely qualify will likely get the highest rate listed, which can often be 50% higher than the lowest rate offered.
Credit Cards that Offer Range Based Pricing are Best: When you review the fine print of a low interest credit card application, look for cards that offer range based pricing. With range based pricing, if you don't qualify for the lowest rate, 11.99% for example, you may qualify for a 12.24% or 12.49% rate. Credit cards that offered tiered pricing often have huge gaps between rates. For example, you may fail to qualify for the lowest rate by one credit score point, and instead of getting an 11.99% APR, you could end up with a 14.99% APR.
Even Low Interest Rate Offers Have Relatively High Rates: Most credit companies use variable rate pricing. With variable rate pricing, your interest rate increases whenever the Prime Rate increases. Since the fall of 2008, the Prime Rate has been at historically low levels - 3.25%. However, when the economy really starts improving, the Federal Reserve increases the Prime Rate to combat inflation. If the Prime Rate increases to its historical average of 9.8%, a variable rate credit card with a low 11% rate will jump to over 17%. Because of this, paying down credit card debt while rates are at their present level should be a priority.
Ideas to Help You Evaluate Low Rate Credit Cards
Deciphering Low Interest Credit Card Applications: Finding a credit card that will provide you with the best chance of securing a low interest rate requires some fine print detective work. When examining credit card applications, you'll want to look closely at how interest rate information is presented. Cards that say your rate will be between X and Y offer you more chances to get a low rate. Cards that say your rate with be X, X+4 or X+8 limit all but those with the best credit from getting a good rate. Full Article.
Annual Percentage Rates: What APR will you receive?: Because applying for a low APR credit card is a bit like spinning a roulette wheel, you may want to take some steps to make sure you get the lowest rate possible. One option to consider is applying for two cards and activating the one that offers you the best rate. This strategy may cost you 5 to 10 credit score points, but if securing a low rate is your priority, it is a strategy worth contemplating. Full Article.
Choosing the Right 0% Interest Credit Card: Most low interest credit cards also come with 0% introductory rates. These rates are especially valuable if you have high interest debt to transfer or if you will be making purchases in the near future you cannot immediately repay. However, just like low interest applications, these offers need to be looked at closely. Full Article
