3.99% for 1 Year vs. 0% for 6 Months
Unless you are planning on paying off your high interest balance within 6 months, most consumers stand to save substantially more with a 3.99% balance transfer lasting 12 months than they would with a 0% rate that only last 6 months.
We crunched the numbers for a person with a $5000 balance on a credit card that charged a 15% rate. During the first six months, that person would save over $300 in interest. However, assuming the go to interest rate after the 0% period is similar to the original 15% rate, the savings end there.
With a credit card that offers a 3.99% for a full year, that same person would save close to $600 over the course of a year-a rather substantial difference.
Clearly, consumers that won't be able to repay their credit card debt in 6 months time are better off choosing the longest lasting low rate. And, given the recent reductions in 0% periods and increasing balance transfer fees, options are likely to become less favorable for the foreseeable future.
