The Mercedes-Benz credit card from American Express offers cardholders Membership Rewards points, just like many other American Express products. Cardholders will receive five points per dollar spent at Mercedes-Benz dealers, three points per dollar on gas purchases, and two points per dollar at restaurants. One point is earned for each dollar charged at all other merchants. In addition, cardholders will receive several exclusive Mercedes-Benz benefits such as a $500 certificate towards the purchase or lease of a new Mercedes-Benz, 1,000 excess miles waived at lease-end, and a $50 certificate each year towards the purchase of accessories. Cardholder will receive a 0% APR on purchases for six months, followed by a standard APR equal to the Prime Rate plus 11.99%. There is a $95 annual fee for this card and a 2.7% foreign transaction fee.
Alternatively, customers can apply for the Mercedes-Benz Platinum charge card. This product also offers five Membership Rewards points for purchases at dealers, but only one point per dollar for all other transactions. Instead, cardholders will receive double the Mercedes-Benz benefits; a $1,000 certificate towards a new car, 2,000 excess miles forgiven on a lease, and a $100 annual certificate for accessories. As an American Express Platinum card, customers can also expect the wide range of features and benefits offered to standard Platinum card holders including fee credits, airline lounge memberships, and exclusive hotel benefits. There is a $475 annual fee for this card, but no foreign transaction fees.
These cards can offer some value to those who are now, or soon will be Mercedes-Benz owners. The credit card is similar to other American Express products and offers excellent bonus points for many purchases. The Platinum card has always represented an excellent value for international travelers that can take advantage of its many benefits. Adding credits towards the purchase of a new car and accessories only sweetens this deal. Finally, if card holders are able to use this card for all or part of the purchase of a new vehicle, they can earn an incredible amount of valuable Membership Rewards points at once.
The Mercedes-Benz specific awards offered have a fixed value that doesn’t vary based on the amount the cardholder spends. These cards have high annual fees that are only justified for members who are able to take advantage of the benefits offered by Mercedes-Benz and through the Membership Rewards program.
These products are well suited to prospective buyers of Mercedes-Benz cars. They are also fairly competitive American Express cards in their own right. For customers who wish to have a premium card and a premium car, they could do a lot worse than to apply for one of these products.
