I am sorry to hear about this. Which bank is causing the problem? I'm surprised they are completely unwilling to deal with you-most companies at least make an effort.

I couldn't agree more. Having heard horror stories about so many other credit card companies, I think its best to deal with a fair company.

Just noticed the comment above about "Discover". I have never used my Discover card much because of their higher interest rate. However I must agree that they are more straightforward in their dealings. Perhaps a higher interest rate with a fair company is better than a low rate that is going to trap you into a mess you'll never be able to get out of.

I had ALWAYS made my payment on time for several years. Then all of a sudden this summer they announced that they were more than doubling my payments. I was able to comfortably make a payment of $500 or less. My first payment at the new rate was $1076. I couldn't pay it. I didn't pay it. I now am past due nearly $4000. I don't need this card and I don't need a good credit rating. I am toying with the idea of just never paying it. I have written to them repeatedly telling them that I would pay if they would change the payment amount back. They just ignore me and make threats of increased interest rates & late charges. We have quit answering our phone because they call several times a day.

Linda,

Presently, the only company that has not generated complaints such as these is Discover. Chase, Bank of America, Capital One and HSBC have generated multiple complaints, but Discover has remained clean throughout all of this.

It seems like Discover is taking a consumer friendly approach. When the dust settles, they want people to remember them as the company that helped them out in the crisis. Of course, this is speculation, but my appreciation for the company has grown tremendously, and current Discover cardholders probably don't realize how good they have it.

If you have the ability to do a balance transfer, I would take advantage of that and move your current balance to a Discover card that offers a 0% interest rate for 1 year. You can review those offers at http://smartcreditchoices.com/showissuers.php?showissuer=dscvr

Bank of America is doing this as well.
I am trying to find out if there is a bank out there, that is NOT doing this to their credit card customers.
Last month, Bank of America suddenly, and without as much as a phone call or email to notify us in advance, completely cancelled our "available credit" on our two charge cards we had with them, but promised us that our interest rates "would NOT go up at all."
Today the letter came telling us that "our interest rates were going to go up and the only option we had, was to contact them in writing before May 1st to have our charge card accounts closed, and they then would allow us to pay them off at the agreed interest rates."
I had heard that some smaller banks were not doing these things to their customers, as they didn't lose a lot of money doing "toxic" mortgage investments.
I would love to know what banks are NOT, as we would like to close our checking account with Bank of America and open one with a better bank.

Chase is as crooked as they come, I have never been late on a payment, I recieved something in the mail saying they were going to raise my interest rate from 9 to 19 percent and if I did not agree I could cancel the card. So I stopped using the card and cancelled it. I got my statement in the mail, interest rate was up to 16 percent on things I had purchased previously, Seems illegal to me. I know they say not to cancel cards, but I am off this rate race, intentions are always good, you make promises to yourself you say" I won't use the cards unless there is a emergency" .We live in a society, if you want it charge it. If I don't have the cards I can't e tempted. If paying a mortgage and a carpayment isn't enough for good credit at least I won't be used anymore. What I don't spend on payments will give me enough cash to pay cash.

'Thanks for the great article. Just an example of how the corporate scum at the banks rob people on a daily basis. Deceive, lie, whatever...it\'s all about greed. I'm paying off my cards now and will let EVERYONE know about my experience with Chase Bank...they\'re the worst....you\'re better off dealing with a loan shark.
